Ceramicist Polly Barton
Polly Barton is a Sydney ceramicist whose hand-built works sit at the intersection of sculpture and everyday function — fluid forms defined by soft waves, undulating curves and delicate folds that echo the coastal rhythms of rock pools, sand dunes and winding bays.
Her path to ceramics was shaped by over two decades in brand and packaging design, working across London and Sydney. Originally from Henley-on-Thames in the UK, Polly's love of working directly with materials — paint, clay, form — has been the constant thread through a career that began with art college and a university degree in graphic design. Where her design work demanded precision and system, ceramics offered something different: the freedom of the hand, and the certainty that no two pieces would ever be the same.
That individuality is central to the work. Each piece is hand-built using coil or slab technique, or thrown and trimmed on the wheel — then bisque fired to transform raw clay into ceramic. From there, each piece is glazed by hand before a final firing brings the glaze to its optimal melt. The glazes in the collection are the result of years of testing — different mixes, different application methods — refined until each finish feels exactly right.
The result is a collection of coastal contemporary ceramics — tableware and sculptural homewares that are both striking and practical, designed for daily use and built to last a lifetime.
